English Motion Graphic Designer/Multimedia Producer


The English Motion Graphic Designer/Multimedia Producer works to enhance the depth and breadth of RFA's content in English by generating visual storytelling ideas and executing them via motion graphics and animated video projects that result in creative, polished, and engaging online multimedia content. This position will be based in Washington, D.C.; Reporting to RFA's Creative Director; the English Motion Graphic Designer/Multimedia Producer role requires the incumbent to edit and produce the final cut of the production independently.


Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Originating, producing, and publishing English video content for English language audiences to supplement unique content (original and video from citizen journalists/social media) generated and obtained by RFA language services, including the creation of concept proposals.
  • Such original content should:
    • include investigative video programming and cross-service-themed video programming;
    • showcase RFA journalism and follow RFA's Code of Journalistic Ethics.
    • include explainer/backgrounder videos highlighting issues that emerge from time to time, drawing on the same kind of resources.
  • Producing special English language video projects for external events upon request.
  • Supporting language services by enhancing video/multimedia storytelling in related English projects.
  • Overseeing freelance crews hired to work for RFA on special projects, as assigned.
  • Staying up to date on language service programming content, as well as keeping abreast of current and new techniques relevant to various forms of presentations and implementing innovative formats, projects, and ideas in keeping with industry developments.
  • Working with the Creative Director and Director of Digital Content to create and maximize the impact of English social media video content.
  • Performing other duties as assigned, including but not limited to providing assistance to language service staff on using editing software, training RFA video journalists and video editors, and assisting in video coverage planning when requested by the language services.


  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience. Prior experience in journalism preferred.
  • Strong experience working with Adobe Creative Suite to build animations and motion graphics from scratch. 
  • Demonstrated experience in motion graphics or animation in a deadline-driven environment (at least one year full-time experience in a media company preferred).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in video editing and ability to edit first rough cuts drawing upon all available visual and audio means, including infographic design, data presentation, music, and sound effects. 
  • Academic credentials (Bachelor's degree in computer animation, fine arts, graphic design or related field from an accredited college or university preferred) or equivalent transferable skills showing ability to produce compelling animated visuals.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in China and surrounding countries. 
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment and discretion in evaluating and presenting news.
  • Experience managing social media platforms for news/media outlets and knowledge of and ability to utilize online media in creative and innovative ways and to adapt to new technologies as they evolve.
  • Superb video and multimedia editing skills, including strong skills in Adobe Premiere and other Adobe CC suite programs, as well as Final Cut Pro X.
  • Demonstrated ability to shoot, edit, and produce video stories.
  • Journalism-based news multimedia storytelling skills.
  • Ability to conceive and produce multimedia projects and video-oriented projects in a fast-paced editorial environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, including ability to clearly explain concepts and techniques to, as well as understand context and issues explained by, lay individuals with varying degrees of English proficiency.
  • Ability to work well in a diverse environment and individually as well as a member of a team.
  • Professional fluency in English and in at least one other RFA East Asian broadcast language, preferably Mandarin or Cantonese.
